Alappuzha boating for just 6 Rupees | Alleppey backwater cruise | Kerala

Our Kerala Trip’s last destination is Alappuzha and we wanted to experience the mesmerising Alappuzha boating which costs just Rs.6 for a 30 minute boat ride from Alappuzha to Mangalasseri. The boat is operated by Kerala Government and is a commonly used transport mode for the people living nearby to the lake. It is definitely a great experience. We did not want to spend a whole lot of money for boating because we had only 2 hours to spend at Alappuzha. According to Moha chettan, a local road side vendor, whom we met near the boat jetty, this is most economical and budget friendly boating experience for anyone who is in a hurry like us. Thanks Moha chettan for the suggestion and we really enjoyed the boat ride. The boats are seen in multiple numbers as we see autos on a road within Kochi or Trivandrum city.

About Alappuzha

Alappuzha (or Alleppey) is a city on the Laccadive Sea in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It’s best known for houseboat cruises along the rustic Kerala backwaters, a network of tranquil canals and lagoons. Alappuzha Beach is the site of the 19th-century Alappuzha Lighthouse. The city’s Mullakkal Temple features a traditional design. Punnamada Lake’s snake boat races are a well-known annual event. Commonly known as the Venice of the East, Alappuzha has always been an interesting place for those who visit Kerala. The place is very famous for its boat races, backwater resorts and holidays, beautiful beaches, marine products and coir industry. Alappuzha Beach is also a popular picnic spot. There is also a 137 old pier which extends to the beach.

You will find greenery everywhere. The best experience while in Alappuzha is the houseboat cruise. Unfortunately we could not try it since we did not have much time. The houseboats you find in the backwaters of Alappuzha are made using the old kettuvallams tied together and fitted with modern engines. Kettuvallams are famously known for carrying goods like rice and spices during olden times.

Highly recommended and it is definitely one of the must visit places in Kerala where you will be surrounded by paddy fields, greenery and backwater. We will definitely come again with out families to spend a day and night in a house boat.
